Case Study: Custom-Built Home Bar in Robertson, Queensland
Fine Design Furniture recently completed a stylish custom-built home bar for a residence in Robertson, Queensland, creating a sophisticated entertaining area that combines practical storage with an elegant furniture-quality finish.
Designed specifically for the available space, the home bar incorporates tall storage cabinetry, glass-fronted display cabinets, large drawers, a dedicated drinks fridge and a generous preparation area. The dark cabinetry is complemented by warm metallic hardware, creating a distinctive feature that adds both functionality and character to the room.
One of the major advantages of custom cabinetry is the ability to design every component around the dimensions and requirements of a particular room.
For this Robertson home, Fine Design Furniture developed a compact but highly functional bar configuration that makes excellent use of both floor and wall space.
A tall floor-to-ceiling cabinet occupies one side of the installation, providing substantial enclosed storage without requiring a large footprint. Alongside this, the main bar cabinetry incorporates drawers, display cupboards and space for an under-bench drinks fridge.
By extending the cabinetry vertically, the design provides considerable storage while keeping the home bar relatively compact.
The deep charcoal finish is one of the defining features of the completed home bar.
Rather than using a conventional white or light-coloured finish, the darker cabinetry gives the installation a sophisticated appearance and clearly defines the bar as a feature within the room.
Traditional-style panel detailing has been incorporated into the cabinet doors and drawer fronts, adding depth and character to the design. This is balanced by clean lines and a straightforward cabinetry layout, allowing the bar to work comfortably within a contemporary home.
Warm brass-style handles and knobs provide an attractive contrast against the dark finish. These small details help give the cabinetry a premium, furniture-inspired appearance.
Fine Design Furniture incorporated a series of glass-fronted cabinets above the main preparation area.
These cabinets provide an ideal place for displaying and storing wine glasses, cocktail glasses, spirits and other barware. Internal glass shelves maintain the open appearance of the cabinets and allow light to travel through the display areas.
The upper cabinetry also includes smaller glass-fronted cupboards positioned above the main display cabinets, making use of additional vertical space that could otherwise have been wasted.
Together, these elements provide considerable storage while creating an attractive visual feature.
Beneath the main preparation area, the home bar features four large drawers.
These provide practical storage for everything from bottle openers, cocktail accessories and serving utensils to napkins and other entertaining essentials.
Large drawers can be particularly useful in a home bar because their contents are easily accessible from above. Rather than having to reach into the back of a deep cupboard, the homeowners can simply open a drawer and see its contents.
The wide brass-style handles also complement the smaller knobs used on the upper cabinetry and tall cupboard, creating consistency throughout the installation.
A dedicated under-bench drinks fridge has been neatly incorporated between the tall cabinet and main bar cabinetry.
This allows wine, beer, mixers and other beverages to be stored directly within the entertaining area without requiring trips to the main kitchen.
Importantly, the fridge has been integrated into the overall cabinetry layout rather than appearing as a separate appliance. Its positioning provides convenient access while maintaining the clean lines of the installation.
The tall cupboard provides valuable concealed storage for larger items that do not need to remain on display. Meanwhile, the glass-fronted upper cabinets provide dedicated display space and the drawers organise smaller accessories.
Combining different types of storage within the one installation makes the home bar suitable for both everyday organisation and entertaining guests.
Fine Design Furniture also carefully fitted the cabinetry around the existing room, including the adjoining wall and window area. The result is an installation that looks purpose-built for its surroundings rather than added as an afterthought.
The completed Robertson home bar demonstrates how custom cabinetry can transform a relatively compact area into a practical and attractive entertaining space.
The combination of dark cabinetry, traditional panel detailing, glass display doors, brass-style hardware, generous drawers and an integrated drinks fridge gives the homeowners a dedicated area for preparing and serving drinks while keeping everything neatly organised.
For this project, Fine Design Furniture created more than simply additional storage. The cabinetry has become a distinctive feature of the room that combines everyday practicality with carefully considered design.
