Case Study: Custom Wine Cellar Design and Construction in East Brisbane, Queensland
A well-designed wine cellar can become much more than somewhere to store bottles. When carefully integrated into a home, it can provide practical storage while creating an impressive architectural feature that showcases a wine collection.
Fine Design Furniture recently designed and constructed a custom wine cellar for a home in East Brisbane, Queensland, transforming the available space into an elegant, highly functional storage area.
The completed cellar features extensive timber bottle storage, individually positioned bottle supports, integrated cabinetry, open shelving, a dark benchtop and feature lighting. The curved joinery visible in the completed project gives the cellar a distinctive architectural character while maximising the available wall area.
The project reflects Fine Design Furniture’s broader approach to custom residential cabinetry: discussing the client’s requirements, considering materials, styles and shapes, and then designing and building cabinetry specifically for the home
One of the challenges when creating custom cabinetry is making the best possible use of the room available.
Rather than relying on conventional freestanding wine racks, Fine Design Furniture designed the cellar cabinetry specifically around the dimensions and shape of this East Brisbane space.
As shown in the completed project, the main wine display extends vertically across the wall, creating substantial bottle capacity without unnecessarily reducing floor space. The curved upper section follows the architecture of the cellar and turns what could otherwise have been an awkward area into one of the room’s defining features.
The result is a wine cellar that feels purpose-built rather than added to the home as an afterthought.
The most striking feature of the cellar is the extensive custom timber wine storage system.
Rows of timber bottle supports have been carefully positioned across the feature wall, allowing bottles to be stored horizontally while remaining individually accessible.
The minimalist design also avoids visually overwhelming the relatively compact space. Instead of enclosing the collection behind large cabinets, the individual supports allow the timber wall and wine bottles to become part of the cellar’s overall presentation.
As the homeowners add to or change their collection, different bottles can be arranged throughout the display.

Fine Design Furniture also incorporated open cabinetry into the opposite side of the cellar.
A dark benchtop provides a practical surface within the room, while open shelving underneath creates additional storage for boxed wines and other items associated with the collection.
This combination of display storage and conventional shelving provides greater flexibility. Feature bottles can be positioned prominently on the timber wall, while cartons, accessories and other items can be stored neatly within the cabinetry.
Fine Design Furniture specialises in customised residential cabinetry and works with timber as well as materials such as metal, glass and stone when appropriate to a project.
Lighting plays an important role in the appearance of the completed wine cellar.
Warm integrated lighting has been incorporated beneath the benchtop and shelving areas, illuminating the timber cabinetry and creating a sophisticated atmosphere.
Rather than relying exclusively on general room lighting, the concealed lighting draws attention to the craftsmanship and helps give the cellar a premium, purpose-designed appearance.
The warm illumination also complements the rich timber tones used throughout the room.
Perhaps the most visually impressive element of the project is the curved timber feature wall.
The curved profile creates a strong architectural element while allowing the bottle storage system to continue upwards across the wall. Individually mounted timber supports follow the shape of the installation, creating a consistent design from the lower bottle storage through to the upper display area.
This demonstrates one of the major advantages of custom joinery. Instead of forcing standard cabinetry into an unusual space, cabinetry can be designed around the home’s architecture.
Fine Design Furniture describes its service as a concept-to-completion approach and says it has been producing custom residential and commercial cabinetry and furniture in Brisbane for decades.
The finished cellar successfully combines two objectives: providing useful wine storage and creating an attractive interior feature.
Rich timber finishes give the room warmth, while the darker benchtop provides contrast. The streamlined bottle supports keep the presentation contemporary, and the integrated lighting adds depth to the cabinetry.
Importantly, the design also allows much of the wine collection to remain visible and readily accessible.
The result is not simply a storage cupboard filled with wine racks. It is a dedicated space where the cabinetry, lighting, bottle display and architectural shape work together as one cohesive design.
The completed East Brisbane wine cellar demonstrates how custom cabinetry can transform an available area of a home into something distinctive and highly functional.
By designing cabinetry specifically for the space, Fine Design Furniture created an elegant cellar featuring extensive bottle storage, custom timber supports, open shelving, a practical benchtop, integrated lighting and an impressive curved feature wall.
The finished project provides the homeowners with an organised place for their wine collection while adding a sophisticated custom-built feature to their East Brisbane home.
